Manufactured sand

Sand is an essential natural resource for a host of applications and industries.

The availability and cost of sand are major issues for certain industries. Moreover, the stone crushing processes conducted by quarries generate tons of dust. Usually regarded as a “low-value residue,” this dust cannot be used as sand as it does not meet the imposed standards (high content of fine particles).

Our expertise in filtration and air dynamics allows us to provide solutions via the development of a general classification system for crushing dust particles. Depending on the application, the multiple classifications are rearranged in various proportions to create different grades of sand particles. These can then be used in construction projects, concrete mixes, or for other purposes.

This manufactured sand makes it possible for certain industries to repurpose their residues and thereby transform them into a profitable product. They also have the option of selling the classified raw material to other partner companies.

Filter-less filtration

Air filtration is usually carried out via media filters made of either natural or synthetic fabrics. These filters do not have a high service life and must therefore be replaced regularly according to their usage.

We have developed a “filter-less” filtration system. This process uses a series of concentric internal rings that create an internal air dynamic capable of separating dust particles from the air. By adjusting its design parameters, this concentric system achieves remarkable filtration efficiency, depending on the applications and the type of dust.

This type of system can be used to improve filtration efficiency in the context of reduced air volume at high pressure. It can also be used to achieve moderate filtration efficiency in the context of high air volume at low pressure.

Its advantages are multifold:

  • No filters to change
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Stability of filtration/separation process
  • Reduction in the size of related equipment
  • A particularly suitable solution for abrasive products and high temperatures.

Drying

In rock crushing and screening processes, the agglomeration of fine dust particles onto the stone is a major problem.

According to the granular grading and the standards and codes in force, a maximum percentage of fine dust must be respected. The process for fine dust removal and treatment in screening operations generally uses water as a separating agent. Industrial operations then use dewatering screws and water jet systems inside the vibrating screens.

One disadvantage of this type of separation process is that the stone being processed becomes wet and must be dried before use. This drying operation requires energy, handling, and time. Moreover, separation achieved by water generates a residue that must be treated and removed.

In order to promote a continuous and linear operation, we have developed an alternative method for separating fine, dry dust via a technique that utilizes air jets integrated directly into the vibrating screens. This process releases fine dust while providing a dry finished product that meets the standards in force. No wet residue is generated; the fine dust that is collected is treated independently and can be recycled for other uses.

The principle behind dynamic air drying can also be applied to other screening or fine dust separation processes depending on the applications and products involved.

Preheating screw conveyor for recycled asphalt

Asphalt plants are increasingly using recycled asphalt in their asphalt production processes. This reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) requires a great deal of energy to achieve the necessary temperatures.

This high energy consumption often leads to an overheating of the recycled asphalt, which results in both product quality issues and failure to comply with applicable regulations.

In response to these hurdles, we have developed a system capable of delivering recycled asphalt at the right temperature via a preheating screw conveyor. Directly integrated into the system, this independent preheating and handling system incorporates cold recycled asphalt into your mixes in real time.

This innovation resolves several issues associated with the use and treatment of recycled asphalt, while respecting imposed standards for overheating.

Eductors

Product dosing in pneumatic conveying applications presents many challenges and issues. This includes premature wear of the discharge system (rotary valve) in the case of abrasive products.

The rotary valve is used to seal the accumulation tank and to dose the product in order to feed the pneumatic conveying system. Wear on this internal component leads to increased costs and maintenance.

To power this pneumatic system, we suggest the use of an eductor that does not contain any parts requiring maintenance. The eductor uses the thrust pressure of the conveyor system’s booster unit to incorporate the product smoothly and in a continuous manner.

Several configurations and internal coatings are available, depending on the application, to replace more conventional systems with efficient and durable automatic systems.
